People and Well-Being in the Everyday Research Centre (POWER)
The POWER Centre enables psychologists and counsellors to work together on projects and help increase the impact of research through professional practice.
In addition to its research projects and advice to individuals and organizations, the Centre is developing a range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities aimed at enabling enhanced everyday well-being. Recent research projects have included collaboration with the local NHS Hospital Trust and consultancy for Lloyds Pharmacy.

About POWER
The POWER Centre is based in the Department of Psychology, Criminology & Counselling at the °ËØÔ±¬ÁÏ. We specialise in the provision of rigorous evidence-based solutions to enable people to reach their full potential in their wider lives.
Over the past five decades, people have experienced revolutionary changes in the ways they live their lives, particularly in the relatively industrialised and economically developed nations. Lifestyle factors are having an increasingly negative effect on people’s health and well-being. For example, according to the World Health Organisation, people are increasingly making unhealthy lifestyle choices, and such choices account for at least 60% of factors related to individual health and quality of life. Lifestyle choices increase the likelihood of illness, disability, and even death. Unhealthy lifestyle choices have been linked with problems including metabolic diseases, joint and skeletal problems, cardio-vascular diseases, hypertension, overweight, violence, etc. (e.g., see Li, Schoufour, Wang, Dhana, Pan, Liu, et al., 2020; Velten, Bieda, Scholten, Wannemüller & Margraf, 2018; Farhud, 2015; Puddu & Menotti, 2015).
The POWER Centre specialises in the provision of carefully designed and thoroughly researched solutions to enable people to reach their full potential in their wider lives. The centre holds 14 qualified Psychologists spread across 8 active research laboratories. PhD and Professional Doctorate students are incorporated into the POWER Centre upon formal registration on their postgraduate course.
POWER members have developed expertise in Biological, Cognitive, Counselling, Clinical, Cultural, Developmental, Health, Individual Differences, Neuroscience, Social, Sport and Exercise, and Workplace Psychology. Psychologists specialise in interventions related to a variety of topics including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mindfulness, health messages, and a variety of relatively more bespoke interventions (e.g., strategies to enhance successful memory retrieval related to everyday tasks for people suffering with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Counsellors and Psychotherapists specialise in a variety of areas including Humanistic Counselling, Neuro-linguistic Programming, and Arts Therapy.
The POWER Centre team develops, tests, and implements evidence-based approaches to research, identify, predict and resolve lifestyle problems. By taking into account individual differences, we deliver bespoke behavioural, cognitive, and emotional interventions designed specifically to meet individual people’s needs.
